Welcome To The Post-Octopalypse!

Hello everyone! Since I was a little late to the party for Zomtober, I thought I'd try my hand at coming up with something new for us to aim for in the month of November....

So, the rules for the Post-Octopalypse will be very familiar, as I'm straight up stealing the rules from Zomtober. (Hey, is the post-Octopalypse, you have to scavenge to survive, man!) To take part you just need to paint one "potentially post-apocalyptic" model each week, in any scale you like, posting it to your blog by the Sunday (we use Sunday's as the end of each Post-Octopalypse week). So that means one or more minis each week on or before the 7th, 14th, 21st and 28th of November 2015. Since this is late notice, anyone who doesn't get someone in the first week can get a pass.  After all, it takes a while to get those vault doors open. To add to the feel, each blog in the list will be marked as either a SURVIVOR! if they make all four (three really) weeks model completions, or a VICTIM! if they miss one.

 Anyone commenting on this post will get added to the blog list below (and feel free to do something similar on your own blogs- as the word spreads, more and more bloggers can be involved!). Also, as a bonus, if anyone is a member of the #WIPWednesday movement, please feel free to post a "potentially post-apocalyptic" model for both #WIPWednesday and finish him for Sunday (or the next Sunday).

What constitutes a "potentially post-apocalyptic" model, you ask?  Well, where "zombie" is fairly cut and dry, and what might be hunting them is somewhat cut and dry, "Potentially post=apocalyptic" is a bit more open to interpretation.  After all, if it was a zombie apocalypse, all your Zomtober models that you didn't get to still apply.  A radioactive apocalypse could have mutants and all sorts of things, a "no fuel apocalypse" could see rabid gangs searching the desert for fuel.... what have you. Additionally, since *terrain is important*, working on suitably post-apocalyptic terrain pieces for your wargaming table works as well. So, this one's actually a fairly large range, and I can't wait to see everyone's offerings!

Additionally, it doesn't hurt that our club is ramping up for both a This Is Not a Test campaign and a Dark Age campaign, and just went heavy into Punkapocalyptic as well, so we've got a lot of PA dudes, dudettes, robots, and monsters to work on!

Skipping MillenniumCon This Year

   I won't be there this weekend in Round Rock. Life gets in the way sometimes, and I have a ton of research papers to finish grading. But it was a good convention last year and I think worth the time for folks to attend.

   I have been getting a few things finished up. The biggest deal is that I finished up enough Afrika Korps infantry to field a full Africa Rifle Company for Flames of War v4. That's a Company HQ consisting of two HQ stands; two platoons of four infantry stands, a 2.8cm AT gun stand, an sMG42 stand, and 8cm mortar stand; and a 5cm Tank Hunter Platoon of three PaK38 stands.  And that means I can field both sides!

Back To School - 2017

The gym is ready to welcome your child next week!

Welcome back to school everyone!
It was wonderful to meet so many new and returning families at the
Kindergarten Open House last week!  Seeing how excited the kids are made me even more anxious to get the school year started!

I have been teaching Physical Education at KHPS since 2005.  I am a graduate in the Movement Science department from GVSU.  I LOVE teaching elementary P.E.  My goal is to provide a safe, positive, and nurturing learning environment where all children feel motivated to give their personal best!

I would like to introduce my teacher assistant from GVSU.  His name is Kyle Yntema and he has a lot of experience teaching young children in Sunday school and coaching sports teams.   His favorite sports are soccer and baseball.  He will be at our school every morning (3rd-5th graders will have him). I am happy to have him with me this semester!

The first week of school all students will be learning (or a quick review for returning students) the following:

1. Our school wide Code of Conduct  "SHINES" - Shows Respect, Has self-control, Is trustworthy, Never gives up, Engages in learning, Stays safe.  They will learn what this looks like in the gym.
2.  Procedures - We have 27 minute class periods so procedures are VERY important.  We do not waste a second of time in P.E. and the students will quickly learn how we do things in order to maximize our time.
3.  Rainbow Spots and Daily Dozen Warm-Up - Check out some videos of our Daily Dozen from last year!   2nd graders, 3rd Graders, 5th Graders  Each child has a "rainbow spots" which is a small piece of tape so they know where to go.  Ask your child which color team they are on!
4.  Fun & Collaborative Games - We will get to know each other through a variety of fun activities!

The students will learn some of the benefits of physical activity!

An administrator once told me I have "procedures on steroids".  Which was a big compliment!  The kids know what is expected at all times, so our classes run smoothly and everyone has fun!

Gradius II: Gofer No Yabou - NEC PC Engine Super CD-ROM - 1992

Gradius II: Gofer no Yabou is a conversion of the second title in the Gradius series of arcade games.  It was released on the CD-ROM format some four years after the arcade game.  I have already featured the NES version of Gradius II on my blog.  Where the NES conversion thematically follows the arcade original in terms of graphics, the level layout is completely different.  The PC Engine is a much more faithful conversion with the exception that it contains an exclusive bonus level.

From the options screen you can choose the Game Level from Easy, Normal, Hard and Professional.  Normal is fine for me.  Easy is possibly too easy, but is okay for training (it is the level I did my gameplay video on).  Professional has bullets flying everywhere.  There is a different ending for each difficulty level.

As before, it's just you and your Vic Viper starfighter pitted against the evil Bacterion Empire and it's leader, Gofer.  When you start a game you can choose what weapons your ship is capable of carrying.

Each selection contains Speedup and Option.  Personally I prefer the fourth choice with 2-way missiles and a Ripple laser, which gives a better spread of firepower than the normal laser.  You also have a choice of defensive upgrades.  The Shield from the original Gradius can absorb the most damage but only protects the front of the Vic Viper.  The Force Field takes less hits before it disappears but covers the whole ship.

Gameplay is the same as the first game in the series.  The screen mostly scrolls right to left although there are some areas where it wraps around in the vertical plane.  Certain enemy formations and individual enemies drop capsules (for want of a better word) when they are destroyed.  Blue capsules act a smart bomb when touched and clear any enemies and bullets on the screen.  Orange capsules add to your power meter.  When the the power meter highlights an item you wish to equip, you can select it and the meter resets.

The green bacterion is a new enemy.  It has just stolen three of my options.  Bastard.

Music and sound are excellent with the soundtrack streaming direct from the CD.  Where the CD format can't help is with the graphics.  There are flickering sprites in places and massive slowdown when the screen gets busy.  Ironically, the slowdown actually makes avoiding damage that much easier.  

This stage really slowed down with the Moai head spewing out hundreds of colour changing bullets.

The games stages are also varied with some of the enemies and certain areas looking familiar.  

It's obvious which film this part is based on.  I have just lost all my power ups so will soon die.

My only real criticism is one of the stages features a high speed run which I couldn't get past.  It will take a lot of time and and a lot of practice (or a quick look on YouTube) to work out the optimal route and even then it is all too easy to lose a life.  Which brings up another issue - Gradius II (like Gradius) is a one life game - lose a life and you lose all your power-ups after which it is very difficult to get going again.  Nevertheless, it is a great game and a welcome addition to the ever growing list of Gradius games on my blog.
