Hiring: Tools Programmer

Title: Tools programmer
Focus: Engine
Type: Full-time, permanent
Last day to apply: 30th of October 2018

Tired of the constraints of Unity, Unreal and other big engines? Want to be in control and get down into the nitty gritty of engine coding? Come join us at Frictional Games, one of the few companies that still makes their own tech, and get all up in our HPL engine!

We are now expanding our tech team and looking for a tools programmer who will help make the HPL engine better, prettier, and more intuitive. Your work on the engine will be crucial to the rest of the team, but it will also be seen by our modding community.

The position is full-time and permanent. Ideally we would help you relocate to Malmö, Sweden to be close to our core team, but this is not a necessity.

What will you work on?

As a tools programmer, you will be working together with a small tech team that is mainly responsible for our HPL engine, but also tech support for the games.

Here are some of the things you will find yourself working on:
  • Creating and maintaining the level editor for our proprietary engine
  • Making intuitive user interfaces
  • Creating small specialised tools
  • Working with low-level systems such as IO, AI, rendering, sound, and physics
  • Working with Xbox and PlayStation versions, as well as possible future platforms
  • Internal support for a team of developers
  • Post-launch support.
We also encourage working outside of your area of expertise, and always learning new things. The more areas of development you are willing and able take part in, the better!

If you want to know more about Frictional work practices, you can check out the introduction posts of Peter and Luis, who will be your closest teammates.

What are we looking for?

You have to be a EU/EEA resident to apply.

The person we're looking for is creative, driven and self-sufficient.

Here are some essential skills we require:
  • Well-versed in C++, C#, Java, or similar
  • Knowledge in AngelScript, Python, Lua, or similar
  • You have created an engine or tools for development for at least one game
  • Strong low-level programming skills
  • Familiar with linear algebra
  • Knowledge in working with Widgets / Custom GUI
  • Fluency in English
  • Skills in team communication and support
  • A Windows PC that runs recent games (such as SOMA) that you can use for work (unless you live in Malmö and will work from the office)
  • A fast and stable internet connection.

These will be considered a plus:
  • Experience in engine development
  • Skills in 3D modelling or texture applications
  • Knowledge in UX design
  • Lover for tech and messing with the low level parts of the engine
  • Excitement for creating fast pipelines and making it easy to create awesome art
  • You live in Sweden.

What do we offer?

We are a small team, which means you will be able to work on a wide variety of things and contribute to our future games in a meaningful way.

We also believe a healthy balance between work and life reflects positively on your work. We offer a variety of perks for our full-time employees, especially who live in or relocate to Sweden. We also don't encourage crunch.

Here's what we offer:
  • Flexible working hours
  • Opportunities to influence your workflow
  • Variety in your work tasks, and ability to influence your workload
  • Participation in our internal game Show & Tell sessions, so you'll have input into all aspects of the game
  • Social security and holidays that are up to the Swedish standards
  • An inclusive and respectful work environment
  • An office in central Malmö you can use as much as you please
  • Fun workmates, game and movie nights, and other outings!

How to apply?

Did the position pique your interest? Are you the person we're looking for? Then we would love you hear from you!

We will be looking at applications until 30th of October 2018.

Please send us your:
  • Cover letter (why you should work with us, what do you bring to the table)
  • CV
  • Portfolio (or links to your works)

Giving OHW Another Shot

The other day I stopped by Dale's Wargaming blog and read his latest post  discussing Neil Thomas' Late Arrival scenario from One Hour Wargames.  Since I was looking for a quick game I thought "why not?".

I like the boiled down scenarios from the book but the last time I tried the rules I wasn't impressed. Dale has got me thinking that I may not have given them a fair shake. So I decided to try them. Dale had been discussing an ancient game and, no longer having ancient armies (I can't believe I just wrote that after 45 years as an ancient's player!!), I grabbed some 16thC Scots and English and used them with the ancients rules.

The army selection gave the English (Blue Army though dressed in Red) 4 infantry, 1 skirmisher, 1 cavalry and the Scots (Red Army though dressed in White) 3 Infantry, 1 skirmisher and 2 cavalry.

The scenario has the Scots arriving en masse at the start of the game except that all units arrive on the single road so get stacked up. The English start with two units with another pair arriving on each of turns 5 & 10. To complicate things there is an impassible hill and a wood which only the skirmishers can move through.

I had hoped that the  Scots would roll more skirmishers so that one could flank the English while the other ran fast and nabbed the town which is the objective. Having only rolled one, I sent it to the town.

What followed was a prolinged melee with the dice favouring one side then the other. English reinforcements arrived in time to restore the line and retake the town.

At least in the English counterattack the dice favoured one side over the other through the whole short fight.  If the dice hadn't rolled English 5's and 6's vs Scots 2's and 3's   the outcome of the game would have been different with the English being too damaged to hold out later if indeed they had had time to break in.

At last the Scots cleared the gap and their cavalry had just time to dash across the table and make a long odds attack on the town. It was close but the game ended with the English having 1 unit with 1 hit left facing 4 Scots units. A clear English victory.

So what did I think?

Well, it was fast, actual playing time was not quite 1/2 hour. In that time I made something close to 100 die rolls and made perhaps 6 or 8 decisions, all important. Since each die roll counted, there was some tension that built towards the end of the game when a few good rolls by the Scots would have reversed the decision.

On the whole, the rules are better than my original assessment. They aren't my  cup of tea and I still have some objections on the historical side, for example,  most units are allowed one and only one tactic although in many wars many, not all but many, unit types had a choice of tactics and all arms forces are not allowed if using the lists. With those exceptions, when it comes to how the rules play, they work and whether you enjoy their style is a matter of taste.

I decided to reset the table and play the scenario again later using a different period and rules but that's another post.

We Die Alone, Short Film, Review And Interview

It can be hard to meet new people and develop relationships. Each of us have our own past that we have to deal with as we try to reach out and make a connection. Not every relationship has a fairytale ending, no matter how hard we try to make it right.

We Die Alone is a well-paced horror short that provides the twist of the dagger that gives it the extra punch at the end.

I saw We Die Alone at the 2019 FilmQuest film festival (website). The film was nominated for Best Director (Marc Cartwright), Best Actor (Baker Chase Powell), and Best Supporting Actress (Samantha Boscarino one of two nominees). It also won for Best Horror Short and Best Supporting Actress (Ashley Jones).

I recommend We Die Alone for those who enjoy a good twist ending. It not a happy one because it is a horror story, but it gives a solid delivery and leaves you thinking about what you've gone through.

Synopsis: A chance encounter dangerously intertwines the lives of three people with differing perspectives on love.

Marc Cartwright shares what inspired his making of We Die Alone along with his inspiration for becoming a filmmaker. He also talks about what he is working on and what he likes to do when not making movies.

What was the inspiration behind creating We Die Alone?

I first got the idea for We Die Alone while on a hike in Los Angeles. The park wasn't overly crowded, but this was obviously a popular time to visit this particular trail. I studied the other hikers taking in the temporary escape from the city. Sometimes they offered a courtesy smile of their eyes met another person's, but mostly they ignored each other.

I began to think about interpersonal relationships and all of the missed connections that must occur by people not truly acknowledging the opportunities right in front of them. I believe everyone desires love or validation on some level and I enjoy mulling over the challenges in finding successful romantic relationships. For some, finding a partner is effortless, while others find it nearly impossible. I also believe that a person's ability or inability to find connection is a choice—whether conscious or subconscious.

We Die Alone is my way of touching upon the consequences of standing in our won way when attempting to build authentic romantic connections. Inspired by Alfred Hitchcock and his manner of discussing reality with a tragic twist, I felt this film would be best told in the dramatic thriller genre. I'm very proud of this movie. My goal was to make a film that not only takes people by surprise, but also leaves them thinking about the ways in which they connect to others.

What project(s) do you have coming up you're excited about?

Currently, my producing partner Baker Chase Powell and I are developing a feature. I am also developing an experimental piece I want to try out. As a filmmaker, when creating a story, one can sometimes get stuck in thinking about how it's going to be received or if it makes sense. I want to step out of that box and see what happens.

What was your early inspiration for pursuing a career in film?

My aunt was a huge film buff. When I was a child, she would take me to all the movies and theaters became my second home. I was always fascinated and at the time wanted to be an actor.

Eventually my grandfather bought me a video camera that I would use to record myself performing. Using that camera, I started capturing moments around the house and with family, knowing that I would look back on the footage and be nostalgic. I was a weird child.

Being behind the camera led to me being more interested in telling the story. Sine filmmaking was expensive at the time, I started out with photography. Once shooting digitally became a possibility, I was able to really explore and fall further in love with filmmaking.

What would be your dream project?

There is a specific time in my childhood that I want to make a film about. My dream is to use all of the actual homes and locations where the story unfolded during that time period. It's a haunting that I experienced and two of the main houses are still standing. We don't currently have access to them but that's something that I would like to pursue.

What are some of your favorite pastimes when not working on a movie?

Photography. I also like to explore other small towns around California. Being a Los Angeles resident driving isn't always the most pleasurable experience, but once I leave the boundaries of the city, I love being out in nature and in simpler places.

What is one of your favorite movies and why?

I have so many favorites in different genres. Two films that inspire me are The Shining and Rosemary's Baby. I love psychological thrillers and these two definitely fall in line with the types of film I am inspired to create.

One of my favorite directors is Darren Aronofsky. I enjoy characters with a spiraling internal struggle to be seen and have stability.

My ALL time favorite is the original Clash of the Titans (1981). I recorded it from HBO back in the 80s [and] wore out the VHS, watching it a zillion times and then bought the DVD. The nostalgia, the fantasy, the characters, the horrible CGI, it was amazing.

Toy Soldiers, Part 2: Gaslands

Gaslands is another in Osprey Publishing's line of miniatures rule books that exist on their own, without a particular line of miniatures or accessories to go with them. In this case, the game is about post-apocalyptic vehicle combat, so naturally it is designed to be played with Matchbox cars.

The game uses a template-based system for movement (similar to X-Wing) and a rather ingenious way to simulate speed, with cars in higher gear getting to move more often in a turn. The rules are simple and straightforward, aided by an over-arching "rule of carnage" that states that if any rule is unclear or open to multiple interpretations, always go with the option that does the most damage.

The simple rules make it a fast-paced game, which is what you want from a game about speeding cars. Each round is split up into "gear phases" in which cars moving at that gear or higher get to move and then attack (either by ramming or shooting). Going faster gets your vehicle more chances to act, but it also reduces your choice of movement template, which could see your car unexpectedly careening into a bit of terrain, or even off the board all together.

Players are presented with a number of options for creating their cars, including different types of vehicles such as buggies, motorcycles, performance cars, pickup trucks, and even the dreaded War Rig. Cars are then festooned with armaments ranging from basic machine guns to land mines and oil slick sprayers. There is even one faction armed with mad science lighning projectors and EMP pulses, and another that uses jury-rigged catapults to lob bits of junk at their enemies.

While the game is undoubtedly a lot of fun to play, the real joy for most players is in customizing their toy cars, adding machine guns and rams along with dents, scratches, rust and weathering. An entire community has popped up on places like Etsy, providing accessories for players to stick to their toy cars, and in most Gaslands forums there is a lot more discussion about modeling the cars than there is about actually playing the game.

One of my criticisms of Ronin was the lack of accessories such as stat cards, but that's less of an issue with Gaslands, mainly because the game is a lot more popular and there are numerous online resources providing everything from plastic movement templates and custom engraved dice to reusable blank vehicle cards.

Rating: 5 (out of 5) A terrific high-octane vehicle combat game. It may take a bit of prep time if you want to create custom cars to play with, but that really is half the fun (at least).
